Yoga is a holistic approach connecting the body, mind and spirit. It promotes an internal sense of stability in the 'self', by stimulating the body and calming the mind.
The Iyengar approach to yoga is firmly based on the traditional 8 limbs of yoga expounded by Pantanjali in his treatise (The Yoga Sutras) written over 2,500 years ago. It is a disciplined and deeply researched system developed over 75 years by Yogacharya BKS Iyengar who still practises daily at the age of 92 - exploring, studying, writing and teaching about yoga.
In a class this is achieved by practising physical postures or asanas, concentrating on alignment by focusing the mind in to the body. The asanas are dynamic and challenging and can be adapted through the use of props, to suit all body types, injuries and medical conditions. Each class starts and ends with some relaxation.
The Iyengar method has 4 distinct elements, technique, sequencing, timing and the use of props.

Sue Griffiths
Introductory Level 1
I started practising yoga to help with menopause symptoms, especially mood swings. I found an add in the Leader for a yoga class with Jan Smith. The best yoga teacher I had ever had. I started going to class once a week and the benefits were positive. My husband said keep doing the yoga. I was going 3 times a week and any workshop that was on in Sydney.
Jan suggested I do teacher training with Bertha Shakinovsky, which I did and I'm currently a Level 1 teacher about to go to Level 2, all in the space of 7 years.
Sue continues her teacher training with Bertha and regularly attends classes & workshops with Pixie Lillas .
Leanne Donovan
I came to yoga about 6 years ago. I was a runner, snow skier, and netball player, but as I aged I found the injuries mounting with back and knee problems. When the last of my children went to school I decided to give yoga a try. I tried different styles, but when it came to Iyengar yoga I was immediately hooked. It was a strong yoga with focus on alignment, great for rehabilitation of injuries. I realised that with yoga alone I could keep my fitness and tone. This of course was a common Western aim. The more I got into it though the more I was amazed at not just the physical, but the mental changes it made in me It cured my digestive problems, depression, insomnia and overall anxiety, but most importantly it helped me feel at peace with myself. I decided quite early on to become a teacher, and I'm looking forward to growing in practise and passing on the benefits yoga can bring to everyone.
Leanne continues her teacher training with Pixie Lillas.
